What is an Instagram Reel?

You can now record and edit your videos and share them to your Stories, Explore Feed, and the new Reels tab on your profile. When editing your Reels, you can even find a song or audio clip that you like and add it to your video. Users can select music from a huge library or use their own audio.

With Instagram Reels being one the biggest changes on the app, its pushed users to browse and share Reels more often. Reels even have their own main navigation bar where you can watch short, fun videos, which can help your Reels get discovered by a bigger audience. Under the Reels tab you can see Reels from people you follow and also popular and trending accounts on Instagram. The Reels that you see on your Explore page are influenced by who you follow, the kind of content you interact with, and where you’re located. Also, under the Explore page you’re likely to see a “Featured” Reel. Featured Reels are public reels chosen by Instagram to help you discover content that will entertain or inspire you.

How Do I Create a Reel?

When editing your Reels, you can find a song or audio clip that you like and add it to your video. Users can select music from a huge library or use their own audio. When it comes to editing your video clips there are many video editing tools that can allow you to edit your video to perfection.

Once you start editing your video, theres an option to trim and delete video clips, a video countdown timer, the option to adjust your video’s speed, and a library of video effects to choose from. Once you’re happy with the clips you can use the draw and text tools and choose from a selection of Instagram stickers. Creating a Reel doesn’t always have to be recorded on the spot, Instagram gives you the option to upload a video clip from your camera roll.

You can access and create Instagram Reels in 3 different ways: the home screen, the Reels tab, or the Instagram Stories camera. When creating a Reel the first thing you need to do is find the Reels icon. You can choose between 15-30 second videos. Next, you can select your audio by tapping on the music icon and choosing the part of the audio you want. Under the music icon you have an option of choosing the speed of your video. Then you can choose and browse any effects or filters for your video. Lastly, you can set a timer of a 3 to 10 second countdown before actually recording. You can do this by tapping on the stopwatch icon.

Recording an Instagram Reel

Next comes the part where you actually start recording your Reel. You have the option to either record or upload video footage from your camera roll. Once you start creating your Reel, you can start and stop recording multiple times during your video by pressing and holding the record button. Once you record your video, you can start the editing process. If you want to trim or delete any of the clips you’ve filmed, tap the back arrow and click on any individual clip you wish to edit. Here you can tap the scissors to trim or click trash to delete the clip. Next, you can use the draw and text tools and select from a number of Instagram Stickers.

When you’re finished, you can edit the cover photo of your Reel and add a caption or hashtags before posting and finally click the share button. You have the option of sharing your Reel to your stories, Explore Feed, and the Reels tab on your profile. Now all your followers will be able to view your Reel. Much like TikTok, you can create videos and use the Duet tool which allows you to film side-by-side reaction videos. Instagrams tool for this is called ‘Remix’. If you want to react to a video, simply tap on the three dots and select “Remix this Reel”. You can only choose this option on your account if you enable access to the tool. Once selected you can film, select filters and edit your Remix video the same way as a regular Reel.
